What Carrie doesn’t carry

If you don’t know Miranda, Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte you are either not a women or you haven’t been watching television, reading magazines or had an interest in fashion for the past 12 years!  The new movie is coming up and it got me to thinking…

These four women have been getting credit for bringing women better sex lives, better shoes, better friendships, better careers and better cup cakes. They are the ultimate fashionista’s. But there is one area where these modern SATC ladies have been lousy trendsetters and far from role models. They are dinosauers when it comes to technology! My question here is- if she is so cutting edge why does Carrie not carry gadgets? Is it really not possible to be a fashionista and elektronista at the same time?

Through six television seasons and one feature film of jaw dropping fashionista big city living the four popular women have shared their shopping, business, social and sex lives with us. But the only two electronic devices that really ever got any attention was the now famous Rabbit vibrator and- playing a similar role as a single woman’s best friend- the TiVo. Is sex and television really all women think off?

A small excuse can be that digital tools and gadgets have improved a lot since the show first aired in 1998. However I still believe that in the beginning of this millennium at least a mobile phone would have been a big part of a trendsetting working girls life? Here are three devices I believe should have had bigger roles on the show.

1. Mobile phone: Carrie doesn’t even own a mobile phone but makes her calls on something as archaic as phone booths- if she is not on her brick size fixed line at home. What kind of city girl can live with out the benefits of mobility not to speak of text messages when handling work, friendships and flirts? (She gets her first silly little pink girly phone in the final episode where she also get’s her man. Coincidence?)

2. Lap tops: When Carries computer- her most important professional tool – breaks down, she shows no knowledge of how to back up her work. But of course again there is a man to help her with technology. On a few occasions Carrie works on her computer in a café, because she doesn’t have access to her home, but in general the portable computer does not leave the house. What kind of city girl would isolate herself in her home, when the city is filled with wireless networks? And why on earth does she write for an old school paper and not as a blogger?

3. Digital camera’s- Party’s, friendships, weddings, funerals, birthdays, children, baby showers, holidays, road trips, fashion shows on so much more fun. If anyone has a life worth documenting it is the SATC ladies. But they don’t seem to ever carry a digital camera or even a mobile phone with a camera.

But there is hope. I am so looking forward to seeing the new SATC film set to premier in only nine days. Can we expect a digital lifestyle update for the four women? Will we be seeing wild New York party pictures on Facebook, swiping on touch phones, updates on Twitter, hot venue check ins on FourSquare and blogging about the hundreds of bad, bizarre or sexy dates that are of course a part of the Sex and the City brand? These ladies might not be Gossip Girl teenagers but for a 2010 woman to be trendsetting and cutting edge being offline and gadget free is just not an option. If not for this reason then for the marketing dollars in product placement, we might see some changes in the new movie.

Stay tuned for the soon to come article “Gadget girls in Sex and the City 2?” (Now that’s a worry! In the picture below from the coming up “Carrie on- Sex and the City 2″ we see Carrie STILL talking on her stationary phone. )

    A short comment:

Very interesting viewpoint and I would definitely agree with your points above.

But it has to be remembered that every four of the girls represents different kinds of women, whereas I would argue that the character Carrie plays, is kind of old fashion. E.g. Samantha uses her mobile phone very often and are generally more up to date than the other girls. And in todays world there are many women who still do not know anything about electronics and need help from their boyfriend/husband. In Sex and the city it is important that every woman can relate themselves to one of the characters and this is why I believe Carrie is short of knowledge about eletronics.

But yes it will be interesting to discover whats new in the movie :)

    Hi Jennifer

    Good to hear from you!

I agree, but then again. If this is true for electronics I guess it should also be for fashion? But they are all totally unrealistically fashionable. There are very cutting edge in so many ways, it just seems weird Carrie is such an Elektro-not.

I can however see Carries relationship to technology representing the way alot of women see electronics. And the industry is to blame for this. Products are often too complicated and not intuitive enough- for women OR men. For people in general!

So I would like to see technology playing a more natural role in this upcoming movie. Especially because the show has in other ways been know for pushing how we traditionally see women. They are modern independent women. Which in most cases also means technology users.

I think there is a bit more in the coming up film :-)
