Checking in on location based services
By Line_B
Checking in? Check it out! Foursquare, Facebook Places, Gowalla. What is Location Based Services (LBS) ? And why should you care? This way of social networking is taking our world to a whole new level – and putting the fun into moving around town.
LBS, or Location-Based Service is what you could call a geo-social tool. It is social networking with a gaming element. A tool that allows you to check out what cool stuff, like bars, stores, restaurants, museums or parks close to you – and of course which friends are close by and ready to explore the neighbourhood with you. You use you mobile phone and an app to interact with your LBS. You open the app, check in and the app will provide you with information on what and who is just around the corner. The GPS in your phone knows where you are. You can also share places or comments with your friends, you just add a place, or a comment to a place, and your friends, or who ever checks in nearby, will be able to benefit from your input.
Say you are in a new city – or your own city for that matter – and you happen to walk past a museum or a restaurant you are curious about, you open the app, check in to the particular museum or restaurant (or whatever…) and see what other geo gamers has written about it.
Most famous LBS right now is Foursquare. Stay tuned for a full test.
